I Want My Music Television - 3/5/13

There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I thought I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form. If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.

Mama’s Broken Heart – Miranda Lambert

I kind of miss Desperate Housewives while watching the new Miranda Lambert music video. Well, not really.

It's Alright - Matt & Kim

Whenever a new Matt and Kim music video is released, you know you are going to get something creative but the synchronized swimming in the bed is not their best idea. Though I did like the ode to the Dougie.

Chameleon/Comedian – Kathleen Edwards

My jaw dropped when the first knife went through Kathleen Edwards, but by the definitely laughing by the time the saw went into her side. Though I was a bit disappointed when the arrow did not go through her head as an homage to the old Steve Martin bit.

Only a Clown – Caitlin Rose

Whenever these artists go with the filmed in the eighties camcorder look, I always wonder if they actually use an old camcorder or just add the squiggly line at the bottom and other effects in post. But anyway. Caitlin Rose drops her new album today and it is worth giving a listen.

I Want My Music Television - 10/30/12

There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I thought I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form. Begin Again - Taylor Swift

Begin Again may just overtake Mine as the most Taylor Swift-y video Taylor has ever made. And I know women do not like wearin the same clothes more than once, but Taylor, it is perfectly okay if you wear that purple dress again and frequently. Actually come to think aqbout it, she may have already reused it because it kind of looks like the Speak Now cover dress.

Here Comes My Man - The Gaslight Anthem

It is clear that Elisha Cuthbert found the role of her career on Happy Endings where she plays a half wit whose charm is that she cannot take a joke because trying act serious again in the new Gaslight Anthem is not working.

Stubborn Love – The Lumineeers

Ho Hey is a great song, but a bit of a novelty because it cribs its chorus from Naughty by Nature (or so I assume), Stubborn Love shows that The Lumineers can still write a great song without novelty, just awesomeness. Also, “The opposite of love is indifference” may be the best lyric of 2012.

Let’s Go – Matt and Kim

When Matt and Kim released their first music video for Let Go, I was a bit disappointed because they always release creative videos and it only featured a dude dribbling a basketball. The new video is much more entertaining featuring ever cheesy family portrait that may or may not be taken by Ross Geller.

Both of Us - B.o.B. featuring Taylor Swift

I am trying to figure out if this is a good B.o.B. song or a bad Taylor Swift song.

Let’s Go – Matt and Kim

Considering Matt and Kim have created some of the most interesting music videos of the past couple years, I kind of expected a bit more than just a dude dribbling a basketball for three minutes.

Girls Like You – The Naked and Famous

I am really hoping there was minimal CGI involved in The Naked and Famous video because I would like to think there was really a dude in each room flicking the lights on and off.

Diversity - Family of the Year

A nice play of the lyrics, “Nobody’s ever gonna take anything from me again” with strangers taking everything in the room occupied by Family of the Year, even, quite literally, the clothes off their backs. Everything but their instruments.

I Want My Music Television - 6/22/11

Perform This Way - "Weird Al" Yankovic

I have been listening to “Weird Al” Yankovic my whole life, would tape the Dr. Demento Show whenever he was on, even bought his Box Set release even though I owned all his albums, but I really need the Men in Black mind eraser gadget so I can wipe this music video from my memory. Remember his song Do I Creep You Out? I can finally answer that question with an emphatic yes.

Block after Block – Matt and Kim

Matt and Kim are back to their guerilla tactics on the streets of New York City, but managed to keep their clothes on. Why cannot all music videos be this fun?

Calgary – Bon Iver

After working with Kanye West for his Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, I was interested on if Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) would take any of that influence into his new album. And from the sounds of Calgary, in this song at least his sound is fuller. And he also seemed to take Kanye’s recent penchant for weird visuals in his music video.

Life Is Life – Noah and the Whale

When we last saw Noah and the Whale they were telling us that life goes on (or at least spelling it) and now Life Is Life. But with the cheerleaders in the performance shots I cannot help but think of the lost nineties gen Popular by Nada Surf.

Don’t Look Back – She & Him

For those wondering what MTV would have looked back in the sixties, this looks like She & Him asked Don Draper to create a music video for them.

Electric Love – Dirty Vegas

Supposedly this video by Dirty Vegas is the first of three videos that serve as a primer to Jena Malone’s upcoming film Sucker Punch coming out in March. Though I am not entirely sure what Malone’s, um, interesting dance technique have to do with the movie but color me excited.

Cameras – Matt and Kim

Matt & Kim sure like to go all out for their video be it graphic nudity of the previous clip or the graphic violence here.

She’s Got Nothing On (But the Radio) – Roxette

Holy Roxette sighting!
